Last week UK faced fierce storms and a number of properties were damaged in many parts of the country. West Country and Wales are the most affected regions of South England and many householders are approaching their insurance companies to make claim for the damaged property. It is estimated that the claims will cost millions of pounds to the insurance companies. Generally, storm-surge damage is covered under the homeowner’s insurance policy whereas flood damage is only covered by government issued insurance. So, the insurance companies may not pay those homeowners who claim on the basis of flood or wind damage. On the other hand, many insurance companies such as Norwich Union Legal & General, Direct Line, Halifax Home Insurance are preparing for the huge volume of calls they will receive and also had employed additional staff at their call centers. The insurance companies also expect a deep rise in applications from homeowners for insurance of their property influenced by the recent storms. When floods damaged numerous properties in Yorkshire and Gloucestershire last year, the number of applications for property insurance went up drastically. So, the companies are taking advantage of the situation to expand their customer base and sending emergency home response teams to help their customers at their difficult times. |
