What is Career Coaching?
There are many times in life when we find ourselves in a job we don’t like, heading in the wrong direction for our working life.
At other times, through no fault of our own, we find ourselves out of work ; made redundant because a company folds or decides to streamline or change its operations.
If you find yourself job hunting over 40, it can be quite a daunting to task to find a suitable position quickly, and, if you fail to get an interview a few times, you soon start doubting yourself and your ability to ever work again!
Obviously, the world of work has changed dramatically over the last couple of decades. The old model of a business employing thousands under one roof is dying out, and businesses are finding it easier and cheaper to outsource tasks or whole departments to another smaller business or even to freelance workers online.
If your experience of selling your services pre-dates the Internet age, the changes may be baffling, and you might need to brush up a few simple skills on how to effectively promote yourself online.
Faced with new skills to learn and a whole new approach to finding a job, it can be easy to allow self-doubt to creep in, and you can suffer from frustration, overwhelm, or even mind blocks in your quest to see the direction you should go.
Often your immediate family and friends have little knowledge of current trends in the workplace, and, rather than assisting and supporting you in you search for employment, they re-inforce your assumption that there are no suitable jobs around, that you are too old or under-qualified, or that you just have to settle for whatever is available – even if it is totally outside your skills or experience.
Newspapers and the TV news are also drip feeding you with gloom and despondency, and simply add to your collection of horror stories about some people made redundant at 40 who will never work again!
Your subconscious doesn’t want change – it just wants to keep you safe where you are; it is certainly not on your side as far as ambition or goals are concerned.
Before long you can find yourself on a downward spiral of despondency and struggle to see how the world really is. There is plenty of work and you have plenty to offer; you just need some help to know how to go about embracing the changes and making them work for you.
The same applies to being stuck in a job you hate; you don’t have to stay stuck because of the false assumptions you have of low employment or your age being a barrier to your success.
Don’t give up until you’ve tried career coaching.
